Before we dive into how to play Blackjack, we need to talk about the ultimate goal of the game, which is to, in its simplest form, beat the dealer.
Unlike poker, where you’re playing against other players, in Blackjack it’s all about your game against the dealer.
How do you beat the dealer?
Beat the dealer by getting closer to 21 than the dealer, without going over 21. Or, if the dealer goes over 21 before you. That's why the game is called 21.
How do you lose?
If the dealer gets closer to 21 or you go over 21, you’ll lose the game.
What are the card values in Blackjack?
The numerical value of the cards in Blackjack is very straightforward;
- The “2” through “10” are simply going to be their point values. (2-10) = FACE VALUE
- Jack, Queen and King are essentially 10s. J, Q, K = 10 POINTS
- The Ace is unique, in that it can be worth “1” or “11”. Whichever is going to be the best for the hand. Ace = 1 OR 11 - YOU DECIDE
How the game is dealt
- You and the dealer each get dealt two cards.
- You can see your own cards but only one of the dealer's cards.
- You decide if you want to get more cards (hit) to try to get closer to 21 or if you want to keep your current total (stand).
- If your total goes over 21, you lose (bust).
- After you finish, the dealer reveals their hidden card and must ‘hit’ until they have 17 or higher.
- If the dealer busts or has a lower total than you without busting, you win!
It is important to note that the dealer must take more cards unless they have over 17.
Remember, we’re playing against the dealer, not simply trying to get as close as possible to 21.
After the hand is played, there are 3 outcomes for payouts.
- If the player wins, they get paid an equal amount of their initial bet.
- If they lose, they lose their entire bet.
- If they push, which is to get the same point value as the dealer, then they don’t win or lose.
And the next hand begins.
If you’re lucky, you can win a Blackjack hand immediately. This is when you’re dealt a Blackjack, or what we call a ‘natural’.
- If you’re dealt an ace & a 10 value card - as your first two cards, we call that a Blackjack.
- As long as the dealer doesn’t also have a Blackjack, you win automatically.
- So, if you dealt a Blackjack, it gets paid right away, & pays 3 to 2.
- So, if you’re betting 400 here, it’s going to get paid 600. (which is 3 to 2 or 150%).

The Lingo
To understand the gameplay - You need to be familiar with the lingo:
- Hit: Request an additional card to improve your hand’s total.
- Stand: Decline any more cards and keep your current hand.
- Double Down: Double your initial bet and receive one more card before standing.
- Split: If your initial hand consists of 2 cards of the same rank, you can split them into two separate hands, each with its own bet.
